Coín is one of the most up and coming villages on the Costa del Sol.
Though it dates back to the Roman era, it is essentially an Arabic town.Situated in the Valle del Guadalhorce, at the foot of the northern face of the Sierra de Mijas and overlooked by the Sierra de Alpujata in the province of Malaga. Villages nearby are; Monda, Ojen, Alhaurin el Grande, Cartama and Alhaurin de la Torre.  The town contains a number of places and features of interest to the tourist thanks to its geographic location at the foot of the sierras which make up the coastal range. Spots of immense beauty to be found here include the forests of Alpujata, La Fuente, El Charco del Infierno and La Albuquera.
Coin, a place that is expanding fast and is becoming a place of residence for many foreigners.
 Coin is located about 30 minutes drive from the airport of Malaga and 30 minutes from Marbella. The 30 minute Town. It is steeped in history with roots established well before the Roman occupation. The Roman town of Italica was constructed with marble from quarries in Coín which at this time was named ‘Lacibis’. When the Visigoths rules the Iberian Peninsula, it appears Coin became deserted.
It wasn’t until the Moors settled here in around 929AD that Coin underwent reconstruction and was restored to its former glory. The Moors controlled Coin for almost five hundred years cultivating its agricultural estates and influencing the majority of its architecture. The irrigation systems established by the Moors in Coin are so good that some are still preserved to this day.
 Coin became an important centre for oils and wines. In 1485 the village was taken by a siege during the Christian re-conquest. Christopher Columbus was alleged to be involved. Captain Cook visited Coin in 1829.
The village has a wealth of important architecture including several churches. The Church of San Andres is also known as the Caridad and forms part of the hospital. The Church of San Juan is one of the largest churches in the province and has been officially declared a national monument.  The centre of Coin has a wonderful plaza where the old Town Hall is located. The new Town Hall is located in another new plaza (Plaza de la Via) with an underground car park, fountains, gardens and several fine bars. The small, narrow streets are lined with family owned shops and a new commercial centre, ‘La Trocha’ has been built on the outskirts of town, on the road to Cartama.
Although Coin is still really a village, King Alfonso XIII awarded it the title of city in 1925. Here at SpainCoin, you will find a lot of information of things happening in and around Coin.
